The Reign of God Outpoured

Robertson Wesley United Church in Edmonton, Alberta, invited me to preach at a service honoring women in ministry and music. Tammy Jo Mortensen, Music Minister for RW, asked me to compose a hymn for the service as well. I preached on the Syrophoenician woman from Mark 7, who appears as the first woman in this hymn.

This hymn is a bit more uptempo than Eventide is often sung, fitting with the upbeat message of good news in the lyrics.

The Reign of God Outpoured
Tune: EVENTIDE (Abide with Me)

One daring woman, stepping out of place,
Begs for a healing, crumbles of God’s grace.
Boundaries are broken, one more life restored.
This is the reign of God outpoured.

One desperate woman, for twelve years condemned,
Slips through the masses, reaching for a hem.
Boundaries are broken, one more life restored.
This is the reign of God outpoured.

One seeking woman, though by many cursed,
Drinks of the life which queches every thirst.
Boundaries are broken, one more life restored.
This is the reign of God outpoured.

One faithful woman, rising ‘fore the dawn,
Runs bearing news when finding the stone gone.
Boundaries are broken, one more life restored.
This is the reign of God outpoured.

Spirit of God, with these our outstretched hands,
Bring forth the justice as our faith commands.
We see the boundaries, lives to be restored;
Help us to be the reign of God outpoured.
